What Makes This Tarot Deck Unique?

From 2012 to 2014, 62 diverse artists from across the United States, primarily from the Midwest, were commissioned to recreate one or two tarot cards in their own artistic style. The resulting 78-card deck, titled "The Family Tarot Deck," showcases a vast spectrum of artwork, including contributions from men, women, children, amateurs, professionals, and individuals of various ages and cultural backgrounds.

Each artist embarked on their own creative journey, some completing their card in a single day, while others spent months perfecting their work. The stories behind the artistry are reflected in the final products, with each card exhibiting a unique medium, from acrylic and oil paint to colored pencils, mixed media, and more. The back of the cards has also been specially designed for this collaborative deck.

To maintain a consistent visual theme, the artists were provided with 16x20-inch stretched canvases with black borders. Beyond this, they were given complete artistic freedom to choose their preferred mediums and take as much time as needed, without any deadlines.

The Artwork and Its Meaning

The tarot deck features a diverse range of artwork, each with its own captivating story and symbolism. The Two of Cups card, for example, is a vibrant and detailed representation of union and partnership, with precise geometry and symmetrical energy. The artist spent months meticulously crafting this card, reflecting the time and devotion required to achieve harmony in relationships.

The Four of Swords, on the other hand, portrays the theme of isolation and meditation. With its simple yet colorful design, the card invites the viewer to look inward and find a peaceful stillness that shields against the distractions of everyday life.

The Page of Cups, one of the court cards, embodies simplicity and innocence. The fluid brush strokes and light colors evoke the creative energy of water, encouraging an open-minded exploration of new ideas and opportunities.

The Magician, a significant card in the Major Arcana, represents the power of manifestation and raw potential. The artist's depiction showcases the Magician's connection between the spiritual and material realms, with the four suits of the tarot represented on the table and in the Magician's hands.

The Knight of Coins, from the Coins Minor Arcana, symbolizes the dedication and responsibility required to achieve one's goals. The use of silver and gold in the painting reflects the journey towards excellence, where perseverance and focus are essential.

Lastly, the Ace of Cups, the first card in the Cups suit, embodies love, new relationships, compassion, and intuition. The cup represents the container of the subconscious mind, inviting the viewer to open up to the abundance of love and emotional fulfillment around them.

Each card in "The Family Tarot Deck" is a unique artistic expression, created by a different artist commissioned in Wisconsin, making this tarot deck a truly one-of-a-kind collaborative work of art.
